Osteopathy for your baby

Osteopathy for your baby

Osteopaths are qualified to work with babies and children and often use gentle techniques such as cranial osteopathy when treating. During your consultation, a case history will be taken at first to understand the reason for the appointment and questions will be asked about pregnancy and birth as well as screening for medical conditions in case you need to seek help from another health professional such as your doctor or midwife. Gentle manipulation could help soothe and relax your baby. After a treatment you may find that your baby sleeps for an extended period of time.

In some cases, osteopaths also work alongside lactation consultants to advise on posture to help with breastfeeding.

As the saying goes "it takes a village to raise a child", I believe it is important to collaborate with other practitioners in order to help new parents with their newborns. Osteopathy can help soothe your baby but there are also other ways to help interacting with your baby and soothe them. Baby massage has been around for years throughout different cultures and is known to help with bonding and relaxing as well as many other benefits. If you would like to know more about it, I would advise to contact Sarah Thompson @thewisehippokentandsurrey for more information.

What is cranial osteopathy?

As the babies’ skeletons are softer than an adult’s, cranial osteopathy which involves gentler techniques are usually preferable when treating babies. Cranial osteopathy is actually no different to osteopathy, it just defines techniques that are more subtle and involve working with the anatomy and the physiology of the head as well as the rest of the body. The osteopathic treatment is based on the principle that the body has a self-healing mechanism and throughout the process, the body will restore its balance and relax.

Cranial osteopathy is used to diagnose areas of strains and dysfunction through subtle changes of tension in the body. Osteopathic techniques are suitable for children at all stages of development. Throughout the assessment, I will be checking what is more suitable and will help your child feel better.

Here is what parents have to say about their visit with their babies:

“I have seen Heloise twice for my baby due to tension and helping with her reflux and my baby has been so much more comfortable and better lying flat. Heloise was very knowledgeable, so good with my baby and I felt very at ease when needing to breastfeed during the session. I have recommended her to my other mum friends too.” Jo, Olive’s mum

“I went to Heloise for my baby Milo because he was suffering from colic. Heloise took the time to explain the possible reasons he was suffering from colic and how the treatment could help. After a couple of sessions, my baby was feeling much happier and so was I.” Marie, Milo’s mum
